Through satire and invented narrative, Kathy Aoki deploys humorous strategies to critique the absurd power structures associated with gender, beauty, art, and politics. Work formats include prints, sculpted “artifacts,” and dioramas, often presented within a simulated museum environment. Past topics included Hello Kitty Monument, disgraced patriarchal monuments, and a recent narrative series entitled Koons Ruins that satirically documents a fictional vendetta against Jeff Koons' art. A performance aspect as "curator" complements the work via lectures delivered with fictitious academic excellence and dry humor.
