September 29 - December 1, 2017

Some artists intentionally employ their practice to respond to, challenge, or even rewrite, long-standing cultural narratives and values. In other cases, artists essentially help to write the history when their artwork becomes an iconic representation of an era or they document of a specific movement or event. Others yet utilize their practice to set the record straight, sometimes bringing to light previously unknown details.

Spanning paintings, photographs, prints, and video, artworks in (Re)Writing the Narrative examine our accepted, and at times unchallenged, social narratives. Addressing content ranging from racial and ethnic oppression to gender stereotypes, fairy tales to historical events, the artists included use humor, abstraction, and, at times, pointed commentary to create new understandings of our current realities by exposing our complicated histories and processing recent events.

This exhibition includes works by Ana Teresa Fernández, Andy Warhol, Carrie Mae Weems, Chris Hardy, Deborah Oropallo, Evri Kwong, Hung Liu, Kathy Aoki, Masami Teraoka, and William Hogarth.
