Our program

The online Teacher Education program allows students to pursue their passion of becoming a teacher in a convenient format. With full or part time enrollment options, the online program delivers the Santa Clara education in both a synchronous (content delivered in real time) and asynchronous (content can be viewed at any time) course schedule.  In addition to the online courses, students will participate in two intensive weekend residencies--the first to begin the program, introduce Santa Clara University and its resources and the second to re engage the students midway through their program. 

 
Also available are an internship pathway for current teachers and a Bilingual Authorization (Spanish).

Program Options

We offer several options to allow students to create their own experience

 Elementary Education - Students learn effective, research-tested strategies for teaching reading, mathematics and science in the early grades.  Core attention to issues of equity and inclusive learning practices for younger children.
 Secondary Education - Students will learn effective, research-tested strategies for supporting high school students and fostering positive classroom cultures.  Single Subject credentials offered in: English, mathematics, biological sciences, chemistry, geosciences, physics, social science, and world languages (Spanish).
 Catholic Education- Masters programs for both existing Catholic teachers across California (CatMAT) - starts in late June, 2023.
 Bilingual Authorization - We offer an optional program that allows teachers to receive their California Bilingual Authorization.

Program Details

Aligned with our long tradition of learning in community with each other, our online program will have a majority of content taught synchronously via Zoom meetings. Classes will typically meet weekly via zoom, with some content and/or meetings taking place asynchronously.


  • Two year program
  • Evening classes
  • Residency requirement - two three-day weekends (September 7-10, 2023 and Feb/March, 2024).
  • Application deadline is May 15 for Teacher Education, May 1 for Catholic MA program. Application may be accepted after the deadline if space permits.
  • Teaching placement will be in your local area
  • See the Bursar's Office for a full list of tuition & fees for graduate students.
  • Certain California mandated tests may be required. Please contact an admissions counselor soon to discuss your options.

Our Teacher Education programs are offered part-time, full-time, online or in-person. This allows students to fit our programs into their schedule, not the other way around. Masters of Arts in Teaching and Teaching Credential

In response to the growing demand for flexible teacher-education programs, Santa Clara University’s School of Education and Counseling Psychology (ECP) is bringing its Teacher Education programs online, offering a Master of Arts and teaching credential for public, private, and Catholic school teachers. Aligning with the commitment to prepare educators dedicated to ensuring all learners are supported in the classroom, this program is the first online offering from the School of Education and Counseling Psychology.

Leverage Grant

Santa Clara University professor and associate dean of the School of Education and Counseling Psychology Marco Bravo has received a $2.7 million grant from the National Professional Development Program of the Department of Education to fund “Project Leverage.”

To help support the development of high-quality mathematics teaching in high-need schools, the National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a $3 million grant to Santa Clara University to pay for 20 future math teachers to earn both a master’s degree and teaching credential, while learning cutting-edge approaches to teaching math.
