Matt Long
Matt Long

Matt Long has over 25 years of experience in the Aerospace Industry at Lockheed Martin Space. Matt is an LM Fellow in Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) and supports various spacecraft and missile programs. Matt is also the GNC lead for the Common Controls and Avionics group within LM that specializes in motor control and hardware-based control system development. Matt’s experience lies in the areas of satellite bus and missile control system design and analysis with specialties in thruster and reaction wheel control, gimbal control, momentum management, vehicle level testing, precision pointing of motor control mechanisms, and development of control simulations. Matt’s work experience also includes spacecraft launch and early orbit operations and has supported numerous launches and on-orbit deployments and played an integral part in rescuing a stranded military communications satellite after its main propulsion subsystem failed and was part of the Operations team that won the Aviation Week Laureate Award. Matt also supports internal research & development projects and training programs and is active in promoting knowledge continuity within LM through the development and teaching of GNC critical skills training classes along with mentoring junior and senior engineers.

Matt holds a BS in Engineering Science and Mechanics with a Minor in Engineering Mechanics from The Pennsylvania State University in State College, PA and a MS in Aerospace Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, VA. Matt has also completed a Stanford/Lockheed Martin Spacecraft Design Program and helped design and build QuakeSat, an earthquake detection spacecraft for Stellar Solutions/QuakeFinder based on the cubesat concept. He also completed a certificate program in Winemaking from University of California Davis, in Davis CA.

In his spare time, Matt enjoys winemaking, competitive clay target shooting, running, skiing, snowboarding, and traveling with his wife Cristina.
