Em Dang
Lab Manager

Em Dang is the dedicated Lab Manager at the Imaginarium, where their multifaceted role encompasses system maintenance, curriculum design, VR research project management, student mentoring, skill development, software proficiency, outreach initiatives, and collaboration with industry partners and other universities. During their undergraduate years, Em was introduced to the Imaginarium when they enrolled in 3D modeling and VR development courses. Their enthusiasm for VR development propelled them into becoming a student developer, taking on VR research projects, and ultimately assuming the role of Lab Manager after graduating from SCU with both a B.S. and M.S. in Computer Science & Engineering.

Em's passion for VR and game development rekindled their love for computer science, appreciating the visual, physical, and overall rewarding aspects of the work. Em is also particularly fond of working with students, relishing the opportunity to impart valuable skills that will shape their future careers and witnessing their ideas come to life. Their dedication to the Imaginarium team extends to their enjoyment of the multidisciplinary nature of the space, where students and team members encompass a wide range of talents, from artists and programmers to filmmakers, researchers, and musicians. Em finds it inspiring to work alongside and within a diverse community of individuals who are constantly learning from each other, collaborating on innovative projects, and exploring powerful topics.

They also find themselves continually amazed by the unwavering drive and camaraderie among the students in the community, who despite their busy schedules, find time to engage in independent projects, organize workshops, teach one another, and forge strong friendships outside of their work commitments. Em's fondest memory in the Imaginarium involves a "Powerpoint party night," where members of the lab bonded by being treated to an entertaining interest-based Powerpoint presentation as a way to end the school year. Beyond their lab work, Em channels their creativity into digital art and game design, as well as finding joy in the kitchen. Em is driven by the sense of fulfillment that comes from solving intricate problems and seeing projects reach their intended goals, both as an individual and as an integral part of the Imaginarium's vibrant and collaborative community.
