On Sunday, Dec. 8, the theater group El Teatro Corazon, Santa Clara University and Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish of San Jose will present the 17th annual sacred drama, dance and song program "La Virgen del Tepeyac: The Apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe."

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Dec. 2, 2013 — On Sunday, Dec. 8, the theater group El Teatro Corazon, Santa Clara University and Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish of San Jose will present the 17th annual sacred drama, dance and song program "La Virgen del Tepeyac: The Apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe.”

The event will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. at Santa Clara University’s Mission Church. Admission is free and open to the public.

A highly popular, standing-room-only event, La Virgen Del Tepeyac celebrates the apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe in the year 1531, when the mother of Jesus first appeared to the indigenous Aztec Juan Diego on the Hill of Tepeyac, outside of present-day Mexico City. The drama retells the hardships he endures to bring the news of the apparition to the local bishop, and her wish that the bishop build a church for the indigenous people in her honor.

The program is in Spanish with English commentary throughout. It is presented by Sacred Heart Parish of San Jose and Santa Clara University, in special collaboration with the Sacred Heart -affiliated theater group Teatro Corazón.

Also during the celebration, the San Juan Diego Scholarship, a four-year tuition scholarship to Santa Clara University, will be awarded to this year’s recipient, Ruby Luna. The San Juan Diego Scholarship is a need-based scholarship funded by SCU since 1999.  Candidates apply through Sacred Heart Parish, and must meet SCU admission requirements as freshmen or transfer students. The recipient also is chosen based on youth leadership and parish and community involvement.
