History & Highlights

Since the founding of the Chicano/Hispanic Alumni Chapter in 1979 and the Black Alumni & Friends Group in 1981, our alumni-led Identity-Based Groups have provided outstanding engagement opportunities by bringing alumni together around their shared backgrounds and cultures.

  • Asian Pacific Islander Alumni Group

In November 2009 the Alumni Association chartered our Asian Pacific Islander Alumni Chapter to encourage and develop lifelong relationships between Asian, Pacific Islander, South Asian, Southeast Asian, and any self-identifying Asian alumni and the University, fellow alumni, faculty, staff, current students, and prospective students (future Broncos). There first chapter event was a Post-Work Reception in February 2011 where 33 alumni gather to reconnect with each other and SCU.

  • Black Alumni Group

In 2014 the Alumni Association and the Black Alumni Group hosted A History of SCU’s Diverse Veteran Community (link to photo album). This event honored Melvin B.  Lewis ’53 Santa Clara’s first African American graduate, first African American athlete, and first African American ROTC graduate.  After the event Mr. Lewis joining the Alumni Association for an interview chronicling how his life was shaped by lesson he learned and experiences had at SCU.

  • LGBTQ+ Alumni Group

LGBTQ + Alumni Group celebrated their first ever gathering at Grand Reunion in 2016. The event not only led to the beginning of a fund supporting the Rainbow Resource Center, its success led to the alumni group being officially approved by the Alumni Association Board of Directors in March 2017.
