“Education, higher education, is essential,” said former MLB player Randy Winn ’96 as he shared his story during the first-ever Black Excellence, Success, and Trailblazing (BEST) college prep program in January 2021. In partnership with the SCU Admission Office, BEST brought together faculty, staff, students, and alumni in a two-day virtual program to mentor Black students and encourage the pursuit of higher education.
“For me, being a student gave me a chance to go to Santa Clara, which gave me a chance to play in the major leagues, which changed my life,” Winn explained. In serving as mentors, he and fellow Broncos SCU Regent Latanya Hilton ’96, Helen Kassa ’20, Katrina Logan J.D. ’08, and NeChele Rucker J.D. ’09, inspired beyond their words.
