1098-T

Educational Tax Credit

The 1098-T form will be available through Workday by January 31st. Students who separated from Santa Clara University before the Fall term will have their 1098-T form mailed by January 31st.

The IRS form 1098-T is automatically filed with the IRS by Santa Clara University for each student who is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and has qualified payments toward qualified tuition and related expenses billed during the calendar year (January 1 through December 31). Informational returns for non-resident alien students are filed only when requested by the student.

Your financial records serve as official supporting documentation for your federal income tax return.

There is no IRS requirement that you must claim the education credit. Claiming education tax benefits is a voluntary decision for those who qualify. Please consult your tax preparer for advice concerning utilizing this tax-related document.

Please note: Santa Clara University staff does not provide tax advice to individuals.

The deadline for remitting required documentation to Santa Clara University to obtain the prior year 1098-T form is March 15th.

The 1098-T form is used by eligible educational institutions to report information about their students to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as required by the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997.  Eligible educational institutions are required to submit general student enrollment information and financial data for the corresponding tax year. Information included is the student name, address, social security number or tax identification number, enrollment status, academic status, amounts paid for qualified tuition and related expenses (QTRE), scholarship and grant amounts, and if applicable, adjustment to prior year amounts reported. Universities are required to issue a 1098-T form for the purpose of determining a student's eligibility for educational tax credits.

No, the address on the Form 1098-T will not adversely affect your ability to file tax returns. The most important information on the form is your social security number or individual taxpayer identification number. However, please ensure the University has your current address. You can review and update your address on Workday.

If you did not receive an IRS Form 1098-T, possible explanations are:

  • We do not have a valid social security number or individual taxpayer identification number on file for you.
  • There were no qualified charges posted during the calendar tax year.
  • You are a non-degree seeking student.
  • You were not enrolled during the calendar tax year.

Provided you are eligible to receive a Form 1098-T, please follow this guide to add your SSN/ITIN in Workday by March 15. No exceptions can be made to this deadline. You must upload documentation as an attachment or the request will not be processed. After you have submitted the task, please send an email to bursarpayplan@scu.edu. You will be notified when your form is ready to be viewed/printed (3-5 business days).

Please make sure your ITIN is up-to-date in Workday each year by December 31st. If you are assigned an SSN, it is your responsibility to update this information in Workday.
