2024 Accounting Awards Banquet
The Accounting Department hosted the Annual Accounting Awards Banquet in Locatelli Center on Wednesday, May 15, 2024. Over 75 professionals, faculty, students, and guests gathered to honor 28 of SCU Accounting & A&IS students as they received scholarships and awards. Several of our Accounting Advisory Board members and Accounting Alumni Board members, as well as student awardee guests, also attended the festivities.
Accounting and A&IS majors submitted applications for these scholarships in March and April. Over $86,000 in scholarships and awards, funded by generous contributions and grants from accounting organizations, alumni, faculty, public accounting firms, and Silicon Valley Companies, were presented to the students. The evening commenced with a reception, followed by dinner, and an engaging awards program moderated by Dr. Michael Calegari and Dr. Siqi Li. Dr. Calegari challenged the audience about how well they know the student awardees and also shared fun facts about some of the activities our student awardees enjoy in their spare time.
Seniors Annabelle North ‘24 (Accounting) and Jason Chen ‘24 (A&IS) received the O. Robert Anderson Accounting Award, which is annually awarded to the graduating senior accounting and A&IS majors judged outstanding in scholarship, leadership, and service by the faculty of the department. Thomas Kelly ‘24 received the Jerry Kasner Accounting Award, which is given annually to an outstanding accounting student at SCU selected by the Silicon Valley Chapter of the California Society of CPAs, while Isabella Estrada ‘25 received the Thomas B. Maier Memorial Award for outstanding achievement as the junior accounting student with the highest GPA.
Dean Grier presented the Alumnus of the Year award to Joe Allanson, sharing that Joe “thinks of others before he thinks of himself.” Joe humbly accepted his award, and was deeply honored to become a member of the respected Alumnus of the Year honorees. Joe reminded students of two things: 1) Everyone needs an accountant, and 2) Accounting is the language of business. These two points combine to open many doors for accounting graduates of our SCU Accounting program. Read more about Joe here.
Noah Chak (SCUAA President, Accounting Class of 2024), along with senior Accounting Association officers Megan House, Belle Yei, and Sydney Yuen, presented the Professor of the Year award to Professor Matthew Cedergren. In addition to his commendable contributions as a professor, Matthew Cedergren is also the Accounting Association faculty advisor, where he goes above and beyond to support the accounting program.
