Over the summer, the returning 2020 cohort completed a diverse set of internships, gaining a better idea of the career paths they wish to pursue, evaluating the company cultures they value, and building their professional network. Three students from the incoming senior class share some of their experiences from their internships.

Kyle Lydon worked at Tableau’s Seattle office this summer, interning on both their Financial Analysis and Planning team and their Finance Analytics team. During his time there, Kyle developed various Tableau workbooks to provide dynamic updates for multiple departments across the company and analyzed variances and budgeting expenses for upcoming quarters. Coming in with limited Tableau expertise, Kyle was able to learn the platform very quickly, working with the product early on in his internship and later on passing both of the Tableau certification exams that he took. Another valuable takeaway from his internship was learning how to start his projects with a strong base before presenting to multiple people who would request different kinds of edits and improvements to work off of. While at Tableau, Kyle also had the opportunity to speak with the Global Head of the Tableau Foundation, where he learned more about their goals to reduce malaria in parts of Africa and provide clean water to areas in need. This year Kyle looks to complete his major in Finance as he finishes the ACE program at SCU.

Another member in the 2020 cohort, Yash Garg, interned at TM Financial Forensics, a litigation consulting firm. Yash interned as an economic consultant at TM Financial’s San Francisco office. For Yash, the internship was a very interesting and engaging experience, offering new challenges and a new industry from his internship last summer as a Treasury and Finance Operations intern at Salesforce. Having recently switched to an MIS major, while also being very interested in law, Yash was able to experience a part of an industry he was passionate about while applying all that he has learned at Santa Clara. He also really appreciated the time and effort his colleagues took to help acclimate him and the other intern, with the company hosting lunch time trainings over a variety of relevant subjects and overall being very patient with teaching and answering questions about new concepts or projects. Most of Yash’s work was comprised of providing personalized analysis and recommendations regarding unique legal disputes for companies operating across many different industries.

This summer, Katie Ishizue completed her internship as a marketing intern at Zscaler, a cloud security platform company based in San Jose. As a marketing intern, Katie worked on multiple projects related to digital marketing. She learned many valuable skills including marketing strategies along with useful terminology related to the technology industry. However, one of her biggest takeaways from the internship was communicating and reaching out to individuals personally to streamline her team’s projects and make sure everyone was on the same page. In regards to the company, Katie really enjoyed Zscaler’s tight-knit environment and the open culture created by having a small team. She was able to personally connect with everyone on the marketing team and easily network with other employees in different departments at the company. Katie is a marketing major and will continue finishing up her degree and the ACE program this year at SCU.
