Marcus Fong: Why You Should Join Business Student Organizations

Marcus Fong
In today’s competitive job market, especially in Silicon Valley, students must do more than attend classes to stand out. Joining business student organizations is a strategic way to gain valuable experience, develop essential skills, and build a professional network. Many of these organizations often revolve around a central industry, major, or specific business function, allowing students to tailor their involvement to their career interests. For example, many students studying the intersections between business and technology join the Information Systems and Analytics Students Network, while others who are interested in financial sectors such as investment banking and private equity join the Santa Clara Investment Fund. Other organizations like Alpha Kappa Psi and Delta Sigma Pi are professional business fraternities that provide a broader foundation in business, offering mentorship, networking events, and leadership development opportunities across various industries. All of these organizations provide opportunities beyond the classroom, such as alumni or professional speaker panels, professional workshops, and even corporate visits, that bridge the gaps between academic knowledge and real-world business practices.

Personal growth is another crucial aspect of involvement in business organizations. Being active in business clubs and organizations fosters confidence, adaptability, and communication skills with fellow students who share similar interests and ambitions. Joining these organizations also helps create a sense of belonging, particularly in fast-paced environments like Silicon Valley, where forming a strong support network can play a major part in navigating the professional world. Leadership development is also critical to personal growth. Well-involved students can run for executive board positions where they can take on larger responsibilities, for example organizing the finances or marketing of the organization. These roles provide firsthand experience in highly desirable business sectors and skills, making students much more competitive when it comes to applying for internships and jobs. Employers value candidates with leadership experience, as it demonstrates an individual’s ability to work collaboratively and handle independent work.

Speaking from personal experience, business student organizations have been instrumental in shaping my academic and professional journey. Through my involvement, I have met incredibly inspiring mentors, gained hands-on experience in business strategy, and even introduced me to career paths I hadn’t initially thought of. Although I study Management Information Systems, organizations like the Leavey Community Fellows Program have developed my interest in careers related to marketing through a Marketing and Communications internship. Business student organizations have also been outlets for me to express personal interests, such as my role as a co-chair of the Wellness Committee of Alpha Kappa Psi where I promote mental health and well-being among my peers. Lastly, organizations like the Ambassador program provide me with a platform to represent my university and connect with students by sharing with them about resources, opportunities, and experiences that I’ve participated in!
