Noelle LaFleur: Completing a Virtual Internship as a First-year

In January, the idea of getting a summer internship was on my mind. I didn’t really know how to go about this, but I ended up getting connected with a firm that is the sponsor of a local nonprofit from my town, and I was able to meet with one of the partners. I was lucky enough to receive an offer from them to start an internship whenever possible, which was not something that I was expecting, but I decided to go for it and start in February.

After working in restaurants for four years and watching my mom grow her small food business, Red Barn Granola, I knew I wanted to work in the food space for my career. Revelry Group is a certified B corporation that creates shared value for companies in the food, beverage and hospitality sectors, and they are the firm that offered me the opportunity to work with them. This was an incredible opportunity for me to get my foot in the door in the food industry and learn more about marketing and what it’s like to work with food brands. We met and agreed on me working just five hours a week, which was great due to my busy schedule of overloading courses and other extracurricular activities. I am able to meet with the entire team each week to learn more about what each employee is doing and how we can all work together on different projects, which is an incredible way for me to learn about different roles and services that these brands need. Although this internship is remote, it has allowed me to create my own schedule and I am immensely grateful for the Revelry team for allowing me to be flexible with my work schedule around my classes, exam seasons, and more.

While it is not everyday that first years are doing internships, it’s even more rare that I’m doing mine during the school year. However this has taught me more about time management skills, prioritization within my schedule, and of course a lot about business. I am currently in OMIS 15, Introduction to Spreadsheets, and have been able to use my excel skills every day when completing projects within my internship. Additionally, my strong writing skills from my Critical Thinking and Writing class has allowed me to write blog posts for some of our clients, and even be published on their websites, which has been a really fun experience.

I am very grateful to the Revelry Group for this opportunity to work in the food space with a tight knit, knowledgeable team that has been teaching me so much. I look forward to continuing this over the summer with them! If you’d like to learn more about Revelry Group or are interested in a summer internship as well, please visit revelrygroup.com
