Will Stanco: Reflecting on My Time at Such a Special Place

I am writing this with just a few weeks left in my college career. It’s gone by so quickly, and I certainly feel grateful for my four years in Santa Clara. Our women’s soccer team just won the national championship, and I have never seen so much school spirit. It will be a Santa Clara day that I will always remember.

While I write this, I have a huge smile on my face. The bitter-sweet end to my fourth and final year at Santa Clara University has come. With just under one month until graduation, I wanted to take the opportunity to reflect on my time at such a special place. Additionally, I thought I could offer a piece of advice for all those entering or attending Santa Clara University.

My time at SCU has been marked by positive relationships, and I have been blown away by the people that I have met at this school. From tremendous faculty members such as Jo-Anne Shibles, brilliant colleagues in Marina Menendez, hilarious friends, and even just friendly faces in the classrooms of Lucas Hall, everybody I have met at Santa Clara has had a positive impact on me. I have found these relationships to be so important during my formative years because of who they pushed me to be. My fellow students have encouraged me to work harder, be better, explore, and most importantly laugh more. I was nervous coming to a school on the opposite side of the country without knowing anybody when I got here four years ago. While there were definitely some bumps in the road academically and socially, I would not have made it this far without such a great group of Broncos by my side.

This realization leads me to my advice for you. Simply put, I want you to say yes. It is very easy to stay within your comfort zone, especially in the first couple weeks of life at Santa Clara. While it might be easy, I would encourage each student here to put themselves out there and really take advantage of what this school has to offer. Go explore different clubs and activities, grab a meal in the dining hall with somebody new, speak up in class, or take a weekend trip. Accept all that Santa Clara has to offer and run with it. You never know what will come out of an experience. Your four years at Santa Clara are a time of discovery. Start that process early and with full force. As St. Ignatius said, “Go forth and set the world on fire!”

Best of luck,

Will Stanco
