Dear ESS Friends,
We have lots of great ESS news. Ted Grudin has joined us as our new Environmental Humanities’ hire. Ted teaches a wide ranges of classes, including first year CTW (Critical Thinking and Writing) and C&I (Culture and Ideas) classes as well as our core Intro to Environmental Studies and Environmental Thought classes. This spring, he’ll be teaching Environmental Education and a new advanced writing class focusing on nature, beauty and hope. I’d also like to welcome Caitlin Lollis, our new Senior Administrative Assistant. Caitlin joined us last academic year and is supporting both ESS and Public Health.
As you’ll see in our newsletter, we have many accomplishments to celebrate. Congratulations to Chris Bacon and Iris Stewart-Frey for launching the Environmental Justice and the Common Good Initiative. We are very excited to see what opportunities this initiative will bring for our students, faculty and community partners. Also, congratulations to Virginia Matzek who recently won a research award from the College of Arts and Sciences and received a $236,377 grant from the Delta Stewardship Council to study Recreational hunting as an ecosystem service of restoration in the Bay-delta watershed.
Besides the other good news shared here about our alumni, we wanted to acknowledge that 12 ESS majors received funding through the REAL program to do their required internships last year. Our students gained experience in a wide range of fields, working as research assistants for professors, for non-profits and sustainable businesses. I would like to thank all of you who have donated to our program. Your generous donations allow us to match these stipends, and move closer to the goal of providing paid internships for all our students.
Have a great fall and look forward to communicating with you in the spring!
