Chair's Note
The 2022-2023 academic year is off to a great start, with Covid-rates low on campus (and relatively low across the country), in-person classes throughout the university, and more and more in-person gatherings that were typical in the “Before Times.” Moreover, it is a time of new beginnings. Under the new leadership of Julie Sullivan, SCU’s first lay and first woman president, many of us are looking forward to how we can collectively strengthen and improve the university. In the History Department, we are thrilled to welcome our newest faculty member, Dr. Mateo J. Carrillo, Assistant Professor of Latin American and Caribbean history (see below for more details).

History Club
The student-run History Club organized a welcome back “Pizza with the Profs” in September. This event, which allows students and faculty to get to know each other outside the classroom, was well attended. Much pizza was consumed, and lively conversation ensued!

Social Media Memes
Some of Professor Meg Gudgeirrson’s immense popularity with our students stems from her willingness to incorporate social media and other non-traditional forms of communication into her classes. Students in her class on the Cold War created memes, reviewed them, and placed them in the context of the course material. View three of the memes created by her students.

The department is using some of the funds from our generous donors to create a new History Internship Program (HIP), paid summer internships for history students. This past summer three of our students gained invaluable experience interning with the Chinese Historical Society of America in San Francisco.
