Dear College Faculty and Staff,
For our last Notes from the Dean of this academic year, I’d like to acknowledge all of the faculty who have or are retiring this year. These individuals have served SCU for between 15 and 45 years, and collectively for nearly 400 years, no doubt impacting countless students and colleagues along the way. Their efforts in shaping our students and alumni have had lasting influence on the lives of individuals and the College. Thank you all so much for your dedication to the College and the University, and for the many years spent as part of our community.
- Steve Fedder, Chemistry and Biochemistry
- Bill Greenwalt, Classics
- Ron Hansen, English
- John Hawley, English
- Tracey Kahan, Psychology
- Art Liebscher, SJ, History
- Gary Macy, Religious Studies
- Kathleen Maxwell, Art and Art History
- Rob Michalski, English
- Catherine Montfort, Modern Languages and Literatures
- Barbara Murray, Theatre and Dance
- Cory Wade, English
- Atom Yee, Chemistry and Biochemistry
I’d also like to acknowledge new staff that have recently joined or will soon join us. Welcome to Cory Gong who is supporting the departments of Environmental Studies and Sciences and Public Health; Janice Thornburg who is with the Graduate Program in Pastoral Ministries; and Elizabeth Cauley who will start supporting Chemistry and Biochemistry next month.
Focusing on further transitions, as Lisa Kloppenberg announced earlier this week, big congratulations to the faculty who have been appointed as newly endowed professors or achieved rank and tenure promotions for their contributions to teaching, service, and scholarly research.
While we celebrate transitions, I feel compelled to add a more somber note in light of the horrific recent mass shootings. Gun violence is a problem that can and must be solved; for thoughtful reforms see Nicholas Kristof’s recent piece.
Regardless of how we frame our grief and outrage, we are all committed to non-violence and justice. As academics at a Jesuit university, we have a particular role to play – in moral and ethical leadership, in spiritual guidance, and in policy reform based on scholarship. I am grateful to you, our campus community, for your leadership, healing and compassion.
