The Center for Arts and Humanities sponsored a talk this week on "The Urgency of Now: Women's Rights and Protests in Iran." (l-r) Michelle Burnham (English), Britt Cain (CAS Dean's Office), Allia Griffin (Ethnic Studies), Shiva Houshmond (Mathematics & Computer Science), and Amy Randall (History).
Dear College Faculty and Staff,
While College Notes is usually a forum for information and celebration, I want to pause and reflect on the bloody, violent week we have had, most notably with shootings in Monterey Park, Oakland and Half Moon Bay. It is relatively easy to keep the somber notes from disturbing our sun-drenched, beautiful campus, but I know that many in the university community have been exceptionally rattled and moved this week.
So much of what we explore and teach in the liberal arts necessarily engages deeply with the violent, painful aspects of human history. I know that many of you, along with your students in the College, are constantly toggling back-and-forth between the past and the present, the beautiful and the horrific. That is difficult, uncomfortable work, as well as vital to a holistic, Jesuit education. So I want to thank you for accompanying our students and each other, while you continue your life's work, pursuing truth, peace and justice.
With gratitude and solidarity,
Daniel

CAFE: Rising to the Challenge: When do our students do their best work (and how can we make that happen more often)?
11:45 AM - 12:45 PM | Forbes Family Center - Lucas 126
Wouldn’t it be great if students walked away from each of our courses with a clear sense of how much they learned and pride in the effort they invested in their learning activities? Class assignments are one of the ways we can facilitate this kind of meaningful learning, but we don’t always take advantage of simple techniques that can transform assignments into productive challenges where students can shine! Join us and panelists Hooria Jazaieri, (Management and Entrepreneurship), Lisa Whitfield (Psychology), and Cruz Medina (English) to consider how academic rigor and challenge can be reframed through transparent course and assignment design. Feel free to bring an assignment to review in the session.

I Didn't See You There - film screening

Shot entirely from the filmmaker’s literal physical perspective, both from his wheelchair and his two feet, I Didn’t See You There is a groundbreaking work of documentary cinema by the first-time feature director Reid Davenport.

Darshan: The Production of Sacrality in Hindu Temple Architecture
12:10 PM | Forbes Family Center - Lucas 126
How is the experience of sacrality produced in Hindu temple architecture? This paper will ask the question of what matters most to the creation of a Hindu sacred space by looking at examples of continuing ancient temples as well as transnational temples, such as the ones built in the United States, in the contemporary time period. This material comes from Shriya’s ongoing research on the contemporaneity of Hindu temple architecture. A Humanities Brown Bag Presentation by Shriya Sridharan (Art and Art History).
