Dear College Faculty and Staff,
For my November Notes from the Dean, I wanted to provide an update regarding our Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) goals. The College has written its first comprehensive JEDI Implementation Plan and the JEDI Council has created a list of JEDI resources for faculty and staff across the College. We have addressed some of the feedback we received about the implementation plan in relation to wellness, language, and accountability. We are putting the wellness and well being goals on hold until we have more guidance from the university on how to proceed. We have opted to use language such as “underrepresented or marginalized” to capture the social justice element of our work, beyond simple diversity. My office will be working with department chairs to discuss how we want to hold ourselves accountable to our goals in the plan. More to come!
Many departments across the College are already busy working on these goals and there is funding available to support these efforts. Maggie Hunter is working with department chairs to submit a joint funding proposal to the Inclusive Excellence Division to fund many department projects.
This quarter, we welcomed our newest Race, Inequality, and Social Justice cluster hire of seven new faculty and an Inclusive Excellence Postdoctoral Fellow: Giselle Laiduc (Psychology), Vivien Leung (Political Science), Vanessa Errisuriz (Public Health), José Villagrana (English), Daniel Summerhill (English), Maia Dedrick (Anthropology), Chris Tirres (Religious Studies) and CJ Jones (Women’s and Gender Studies). What a talented and enjoyable group of new colleagues! We are so pleased they are here.
In cooperation with the CAS Department Chairs, we have created a new policy that we will pilot this year. Disciplinary Honor Society induction fees will be covered for ALL eligible students. In order to allow all students to take advantage of these honors and benefits, a combination of Departments and the College will cover the costs for all students to participate. This is another small step toward making our College more welcoming and inclusive for all students.
I wish you a rejuvenating Thanksgiving holiday filled with gratitude and blessings.
Sincerely,
Daniel
