Dear College Faculty and Staff,
My remarks today would normally be an introduction to this week's College Notes, with highlights of faculty, staff and student accomplishments over the last week or so. But the attacks in Israel last weekend and the ongoing violence in the region have shaken many of us in the College, on campus and in our wider communities. During this week, many of you in the College have joined with me in expressing your sadness, fear and revulsion at the atrocities perpetrated in Israel. Together we mourn so much loss of life and look ahead with terror and apprehension at what lies ahead for Israelis and Palestinians alike.
Grappling with deeply divisive issues from a place of compassion and understanding is the special duty and gift of a Jesuit academic community. With you I pray for a just and lasting peace – may that goal we have fervently desired for generations come to pass in our lifetimes.
As a university community we are blessed to have learnèd teacher-scholars and staff with deep knowledge of conflict and reconciliation in our midst. I also pray that we will draw upon each other here in the campus community to build understanding and compassion in the days and weeks ahead.
I leave you with these words translated from the poem Eli, Eli, by Hannah Szenes, written in 1942.
My God, My God
May these things never end:
The sand and the sea
The rustle of the water
The lightning in the sky
The prayer of Man
With peace and gratitude for your fellowship,
Daniel
