Greetings Bronco Alumni, Donors, and Parents!
We’ve made it through another year, and despite some challenges, we accomplished a lot! As you know from our winter newsletter, the Sobrato Campus for Discovery and Innovation held its Grand Opening in the Fall; we hosted our Sinatra artist in residence BD Wong for a week each quarter during which he collaborated with many of our performing arts students and faculty, putting on some excellent live events. Even with a couple transitions to remote teaching and learning due to spikes in positive COVID cases throughout the year, we successfully graduated 851 students from the College, sending them off into the next stage of their lives as Bronco Alumni. Looking forward, I am thrilled that our Admissions team is bringing in the largest incoming class of Broncos ever this fall—we anticipate more than 1,600 students will join the University as the Class of 2026.
Continuing our theme of celebrating students, I invite you to watch our new video, Curiosity Explored, which we developed with an outside agency in order to bring some excitement and attention to the stellar work that our students are doing on campus every day. We hope this will help set the College of Arts and Sciences and Santa Clara University apart, while also catching the eyes of prospective students looking for a deeply impactful college experience. Our long term goal is to make a series of videos in this same style, focusing on different aspects that a student will encounter while studying here in the College.
On another note, the work we are doing to make campus a more diverse and inclusive place for our community is important to me. I’m proud that we will have one of our most diverse groups of new faculty starting with us in September. This is the third year in a row that a large majority of our incoming tenure-track faculty cohort comprises distinguished teacher-scholars of color. And here in the Dean's Office, we will welcome a new Sociology faculty member, Margaret (Maggie) Hunter, who will serve as Special Advisor to the Dean for Faculty Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Initiatives.
Looking forward, there will surely be many challenges ahead (and COVID will still be with us, alas), but I have seen how resilient and compassionate the SCU campus community can be. With your steadfast support, I have no doubt that our students and their mentors will not just endure, nor even just prevail, but will flourish!
I wish you all a safe and restorative summer; come see us in the fall!
Daniel
