Greetings Bronco Alumni, Donors, and Parents!
We arrive at the end of another academic year, here on campus! As usual, we had a busy spring quarter, but overall, I think, a very successful year for the College. The past few years have been characterized by difficulty, anxiety, and many challenges, but thankfully, this year felt more uplifting. It was great to be in classes with masks off, great to welcome prospective and new students in person, great to travel for our many academic pursuits.
This winter and spring, we brought two new videos to life as part of our Explored series:
I hope the messages resonate with you like they do for me and the team who worked on them – we feel they convey Santa Clara’s Jesuit education and its aspirations for social justice and sustainability in compelling and engaging ways. So many people in the College and around campus are doing great work to help us move forward in these areas, step by step, and I am thrilled to be able to bring some attention to the work we are doing.
Last fall, we hired our very first Director of Internships, Sarah Hays, to support all CAS students in their search for experiential learning opportunities and career exploration. She has been hard at work this year developing our internship program in partnership with our departments and the REAL Program. Experiential learning is hugely important as students are discerning their path after college and exploring future careers. That’s why I’ve built a focus on engaged, experiential learning into the College’s strategic goals and why I am so excited that we are able to provide support to our students in this way.
Lastly, I wanted to call attention to the new pilot program we are running in collaboration with SCU Presents next academic year to grant free access for students to performances by the departments of Theatre and Dance, and Music. This past year, students petitioned the administration requesting complimentary admission to these performances. We agree that all SCU students should have access to the performing arts as part of their SCU experience, and are happy to respond to their request. Our pursuit of cura personalis—care for the whole person—necessarily includes fostering the art that lives in each of us, so removing barriers to our own performances feels both nurturing and liberating!
Sending rest and relaxation your way for this summer season,
Daniel Press Dean, College of Arts and Sciences Santa Clara University
