Director's Message
Welcome to Our Fall 2022 Issue!
The Mindset from Ciocca Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Santa Clara University is jam-packed with perspectives and updates from across our campus!
At Ciocca Center, we like to try new ideas, which is inherently risky. This issue highlights some of the ways we can “manage our risk”, including by borrowing ideas that have proven successful. In fact, two of our newest programs, Mindset Scholars and Innovation Fellows are inspired by well-known, successful programs.
Mindset Scholars is based on ideas from SCU Law’s TechEdge JD program, except we’ve applied those concepts to first-year SCU undergraduates. In this issue, you can read the paper that Professors Laura Norris and Eric Goldman published this year describing the TechEdge JD program.
Similarly, our Innovation Fellows program is modeled after a successful program at Stanford University called University Innovation Fellows. We’ve reimagined it for SCU with the help of Professors Kathy Sun and Keith Yocam in SCU’s School of Education and Counseling Psychology (ECP).
One of our Fall programs included an outdoor “Movie Night” screening of the General Magic documentary. If you aren’t familiar with that story, the movie documents the invention of the iPhone before there was an iPhone, and perfectly illustrates how taking risks, even those that lead to failure, can eventually result in the biggest successes.
Read on for more ideas on how to build confidence and develop the skills to manage risk!

We hope you enjoy this issue!

Ciocca Center presented an outdoor movie extravaganza General Magic! Winner of Seven Best Documentary Awards, this movie shares the untold story of one of history’s greatest tech teams, who after a great failure, changed the lives of billions. The ideas that dominate the tech industry were born at a secretive Silicon Valley start-up called ‘General Magic’, which spun out of Apple in 1990 to create the “next big thing”. If you're a student, watch General Magic for free here!
Congratulations to our 4th Bronco Venture Accelerator Cohort! Our BVA4 team has been working hard all summer culminating in Demo Day and pitching live in front of over 350 guests. Watch and learn about Liam's journey post-college and how taking risks even in the midst of the COVID-19 climate, led him to unique opportunities!
Student Stories | Looking for a club or RSO on campus? Use our Club Navigator, a great way to make connections and life-long friends! The platform came out of Ciocca Center's "You Are Here" initiative, where students collaborate on creating meaningful resources for SCU students. |
Ciocca Center relies on the perspectives of students to ensure our programs and initiatives reflect interdisciplinary interests. Our Student Advisory Board consists of over 20 students from diverse disciplines and backgrounds. This year's board is co-chaired by Darius Johnson '23 and Mubashir Hussain '24 along with Sarah Tartell '23 as secretary. Learn more here!
Mindset Scholars is a 2 year program to develop an early entrepreneurial mindset. Meet the new '22-'24 Cohort!
