Through the Lens of a Creator

    As an educator, I believe the essence of business IS value creation for all its stakeholders. Importantly, end users’ perceptions of value creation leads to value capture by organizations. This can only happen if an offering’s utility is optimally aligned with end users’ needs and expectations. Let me illustrate this notion with BEACH (Bronco Entrepreneurs Advisory Clinic Hours), a novel cross-disciplinary initiative between Leavey School of Business and Law School introduced by Ciocca Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Santa Clara University.

    BEACH is a perfect example of experiential programming to bring together undergraduate and graduate students from business and law, who then work collaboratively under the careful guidance of seasoned business alums and attorneys and advise startups and small businesses. This action learning approach fosters value creation for all involved participants.

  1. Students further their own education and knowledge by gaining hands-on experience and exposure to real-life projects through actual startups. This inculcates an entrepreneurial mindset and fuels their own startup aspirations.
  2. Entrepreneurs benefit from access to several services such as seasoned business advice and legal counsel on legitimate issues. And it’s absolutely FREE.
  3. Alums engage and connect with their alma maters and mentor students by sharing their valuable experience. 
  4. What do we as administrators of this program get? True intrinsic satisfaction at watching this ecosystem collaboration and the connections made that will impact and support the community.

Kumar Sarangee is a co-creator of BEACH and has been an integral part in developing this inter-disciplinary program. He has taught various courses such as Principles of Marketing, Marketing Strategy and New Product Development and was selected in the list of excellent instructors at UIUC. He has won several awards such as the Seymour Sudman Research Excellence Award and the Seymour Sudman Teaching Excellence Award at UIUC as well as the Best Paper Award at the AMA Summer Educators' Conference (2006). Additionally, he was the winner of the 2006 Product Development and Management Association (PDMA) Research Grant and the PDMA 2006 Research Fellowship.
