The School of Pedagogy was created with the goal of preparing graduates of SCU in high school education.
1925 β Education Electives Offered
Education electives were offered in the College of Liberal Arts and for Jesuits identified as good teachers.
1929 β Education Became a Minor
The education program became a minor.
1951 β Credential Courses Begin
Dr. Edwin Brown hired; Department of Education begins to take form.
1964 β Counseling Psychology Program
Department of Counseling Psychology begins, offering credential and MA programs in School Counseling.
1970 β Elementary Training Expansion
The teacher preparation program expanded to include elementary training; counseling program expanded as well.
1973 β Masterβs in Special Education
University began offering a master's degree in Special Education with a credential.
1979 β School Administration Program
An advanced-degree program in School Administration started based on recommendations from local superintendents.
1981 β Division of Counseling Psychology and Education
The Division offered multiple master's, credential programs, and professional workshops.
2003 β School of Education, Counseling Psychology & Pastoral Ministries
The first dean was Fr. Sonny Manual, S.J.
2009 β School of Education and Counseling Psychology
Pastoral Ministries left the School; it became part of the Jesuit School of Theology.
2012 β New Master of Arts in Teaching
Dr. Nick Ladany began as Dean; new Master of Arts in Teaching degree program created.
2015 β Interim Dean Appointed
Dr. Carol Gittens appointed Interim Dean of the School of Education and Counseling Psychology.
2016 β New Dean Appointed
Dr. Sabrina Zirkel began as the new Dean of the School of Education and Counseling Psychology.
2021 β Doctorate of Education in Social Justice Leadership
The University began offering a Doctorate of Education in Social Justice Leadership.
2023 β Online Teacher Education Programs
The School of Education + Counseling Psychology introduced online modalities for its Teacher Education programs.
