OUR PATHWAY
The School of Education & Counseling Psychology is pleased to offer Bilingual Authorization in Spanish to help future educators meet the dynamic needs of emergent bilingual children and youth. Dual language programs have proven to be the single most effective program for students identified as English learners. Becoming authorized as a bilingual instructor can lead to a wider range of teaching position options in the state of California. Bilingual Authorization Program graduates are authorized to teach their content area(s) in Spanish and English, English Language Development, Spanish Language Development and Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English. While many bilingual authorization programs focus on preparing multiple subject bilingual teachers (elementary school programs), our program prepares multiple and single subject bilingual educators to teach in bilingual programs, as well as middle and high school teachers to teach specific subject areas like Biology, Mathematics and Social Studies in Spanish. Spanish language proficiency is required for the BMATTC program. The program is guided by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing and SCU’s Jesuit mission where competence, conscience, compassion, and social justice are central to our work.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Bilingual Authorization is an on-line program for elementary, middle and high school teachers that are bilingual in Spanish and English. Pre-Service teachers complete three synchronous and asynchronous-mixed courses and coaching/professional learning experience that is mostly asynchronous. All courses are taught in Spanish and each teacher candidate is responsible for meeting up to 20 hours of clinical field experience in bilingual school settings.
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
- Individuals interested in pursuing a Bilingual Authorization - Spanish must pass the CSET LOTE 3 (Spanish) exam prior to starting their BMATTC courses. BMATTC Pre-Service candidates who do not pass the CSET LOTE 3 (Spanish) exam before the start of their first quarter are still eligible to join the MATTC program. These candidates may add the Bilingual Authorization - Spanish at a later time once they have passed the CSET LOTE 3 (Spanish) exam.
- CSET LOTE 3 (Spanish) test scores may be uploaded in PDF format through the online application portal. CSET LOTE 3 (Spanish) test scores may also be emailed in PDF format to the ECP Admissions office at ecpadmisisons@scu.edu.
PROGRAM TIMELINE
• Pre-Service teachers begin coursework in the Fall and finish by Spring.
• Pre-Service teachers enroll in 3 content-rich courses (Bilingual Foundations, Latinx Language & Culture, Bilingual Methods) taught in Spanish.
• Pre-Service teachers apply what they are learning with students within their classroom and receive feedback from Bilingual program faculty.
• After completing the program, Pre-Service teachers are recommended to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing to receive the Bilingual Authorization add-on certification onto their earned teaching credential
• Recommendation requires successful completion of coursework, 20 fieldwork hours, and a passing score on the CSET Spanish LOTE III
