Christopher M. Bacon (B.A., UC Santa Barbara; Ph.D, UCSC; Ciriacy-Wantrup Postdoctoral Fellow, UC Berkeley) is a professor of environmental social science and chair of the Environmental Studies and Sciences Department. He leads a long-term community-based participatory action research agenda with local and international partners focused on agroecology, food security/sovereignty, and the political economy of systems change.  He has authored articles defining approaches to agroecology and establishing a diversified farming systems research agenda, and published studies analyzing how smallholder farmers and cooperatives navigate seasonal hunger and water insecurity in the context of climate change and other hazards. Additionally, he has conducted research addressing food and environmental justice in CA.  He serves on the editorial board for the Journal of Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems and co-founded the South Bay Food Justice Collaborative. Chris Co-Chairs the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities’ Laudato Si’ Commission and contributes to strategic planning as a member of Santa Clara University’s Mission and Identity and Global Reach Committees.  He is an active member of several professional networks, including AESS, INFAS, and the AAG.
