Isabela Figueira '18 (computer science and engineering) was selected by the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE) Pacific Southwest Region as the recipient of the 2018 ASEE PSW Student Award. Isabela will receive her award (and a $250 honorarium) at the award banquet held during the ASEE Zone IV Conference, Mar. 25-27 at the University of Colorado. |
Tatum Prosswimmer '18 (bioengineering) was accepted to the Molecular Engineering Ph.D. program at the University of Washington. In addition to a full scholarship, Tatum has also been selected on the short list for the prestigious College of Engineering Dean's Fellowship for 4 years. |
20 civil and mechanical engineering students represented SCU in the ASC regional Student Construction Competition, Feb. 7-10. The mixed-use building team, comprised of civil engineering students Alex Golitz '18, David Aguilar Rodriguez '18, Jeff Stein '18, Monique Hansen '19, and Nick Fazio '20 and David Harris '18 (mechanical engineering) won 2nd place. Devin Schmidt '21 (civil engineering) and his team won 1st place in the alternate problem category. |

Christopher Kitts (mechanical engineering) gave a presentation, "Exploring the Limits of Authenticity in Entrepreneurial Engineering Education," at the International Conference on Problem Based Learning (PBL2018), Feb. 16-19. This conference challenged participants to reflect on problem-based learning and many other active learning methodologies. |
Nam Ling and Yuhong Liu (both computer engineering) will serve on the organizing committee for the 11th IEEE International Conference on Ubi-Media Computing as General Co-Chair and Program Co-Chair, respectively. The conference will be held in Nanjing, China, August 22-25. |
Ed Maurer's (civil engineering) talk on "Climate Change, Water, and the Common Good" is live on the Ignatian Center's INTEGRAL podcast website. Research consistently shows that impoverished countries will suffer the worst impacts and be least able to adapt to a changed climate. This podcast looks at the impact of global climate change and explores partnerships for local adaptation. Listen here. |

BioInnovation and Design Lab received $10,000, the first of five installments of a gift totalling $180,000, from Vernon and Annie Norviel. Vernon Norviel is an alumnus of SCU School of Engineering (M.S. '92 electrical engineering). The gift will support student efforts on projects in partnership with industry to create new biomedical solutions that transform domestic and global health. |

Hack for Humanity: 20 student teams worked for 24 hours to develop information and communication technology solutions for emergencies and disaster relief at the 5th annual Hack for Humanity. Congratulations to the winner, Vigil, a service that uses police direct-messaging, location sharing, and more to make the prevention of gun violence more organized and effective. |
Innovation Challenge: Congratulations to Grant Mischler '18, Dante Dalla Gasperina '18, Ciara Murchy '19, Connor Tisch '19, Brandon Craig '19, Robert Percell '21, and Jesus Hernandez '20 for winning the Nike Entrepreneurial Mindset Challenge! The winning team's entry incorporated competition into the workout by keeping track of a leaderboard of exercises performed at different locations. |
