Congratulations to Bo Cheng, Kurt Sun, and Litong Shen, graduate computer engineering students, on winning 2nd Place in the nationwide SDN Throwdown hosted by Juniper Networks and Comcast. The competition challenged university teams to build and test new Software-defined Networking (SDN) and automation solutions.

Diversity and Inclusion: Congratulations undergraduates, Shani Williams, Allen Shelton, Amritpal Singh, Mai Sinada, and Lavelle Simmons, who were awarded the SCU DeNovo Fellowship. These fellowships provide $5,000 for a student stipend for up to 10 weeks of full-time research plus up to $750 for conference expenses to present posters on their research in the following academic year.

ELEN 183 (Power Systems Analysis) students enjoyed a field trip to Levi's Stadium with a senior engineer from Silicon Valley Power to see their power system and how the whole project from start to end works between SVP and Levi's Stadium.

2019 Kuehler Undergraduate Research Fellows: Tioga Benner '20 (mechanical engineering), Carley Fowler '20 (bioengineering), Brendan Lawler '21 (bioengineering), Kristi Nguyen '20 (electrical engineering), and Brad Shirley '20 (electrical engineering) were invited by faculty to work as paid researchers this summer. Congratulations Mariah Manzano '20 (web design and engineering), SoE digital media assistant, on winning SCU Social Media Council's Choice Award for her Day of Giving video, "What does #SCUengineering mean to you?" Mariah's concept for and execution of the video bumped the School's success during the annual appeal. See the video here.

Atticus McCoy '19 (bioengineering) presented his research in a poster session at Pittcon, the largest conference in analytical chemistry, held in Philadelphia, PA, in March. Atticus was funded by a College of Arts and Sciences Osberg Fellowship, and advised by Steven Suljak (chemistry and biochemistry).

Dayanne Mirra, civil, environmental and sustainable engineering graduate student, has been awarded a scholarship from the Concrete Masonry Association of California and Nevada. Dayanne’s application was identified as “exceptional” by the CMACN board. This is the second year in a row that she has won this award.

Congratulations to Lauren Serfas (bioengineering) and Rachel Han (civil, environmental, and sustainable engineering) recently selected as 2019 Global Social Benefit Fellows! Lauren has a placement with Eggreneur in Kenya and Uganda, and Rachel will be working with Three Wheels United in India.

2018-2019 Senior Design Projects International Deployment: Five teams representing senior design projects facilitated by the Frugal Innovation Hub traveled recently to meet their partner organizations in the Galápagos Islands, Liberia, Mexico, and Guatamala. More.

Story DeWeese '19 (computer engineering) and Mariah Manzano '20 (web design and engineering) are co-chairs of SWE++, a program dedicated to introducing computer science and coding to girls from nearby Buchser Middle School, Downtown College Prep, Dartmouth Middle School and others. To help reduce the gender gap in computer science and engineering, SWE++ hosts fun events to teach the girls computer science concepts.

Mark Aschheim (civil, environmental, and sustainable engineering) has published a book with Taylor and Francis: Design of Reinforced Concrete Buildings for Seismic Performance: Practical Deterministic and Probabilistic Approaches, by Mark Aschheim, Enrique Hernández-Montes, and Dimitrios Vamvatsikos, 576 pp. Find it here.

Frugal Innovation Hub at the UN: Academic advisors Silvia Figueira and Michele Parker presented Heldhi Help, an app design to teach young women and men about menstruation, at the UN Commission on the Status of Women annual conference. The 2018 senior design project was tested successfully in Uganda by FIH’s partner organization, Rose Academies.

Congratulations to Shoba Krishnan (electrical engineering) and Navid Shaghaghi (computer engineering), who were named Outstanding Career Influencers by SCU's Career Center! Established to recognize and honor SCU staff and faculty who support students in their career development, the Career Center solicited nominations from students and received an overwhelming response.

Nam Ling (computer engineering) was named a Minqiang Scholar (Chair Professor level) in the information and communication engineering area by the Province of Fujian, China. He was nominated by the College of Physics and Information Engineering of Fuzhou University, where he has also served as a Chair Professor (Guest) since 2017.

A paper by Maryam Mobed-Miremadi, Matthew Findlay '17, Daniel Freitas '17 (bioengineering) and lead author Korin Wheeler (chemistry, biochemistry) was selected Best Paper in Environmental Science: Nano and the Best Overall Paper in 2018 in the Environmental Science family of journals.
