Dr. Jes Kuczenski joined the engineering faculty at Santa Clara University in 2014. She obtained her M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame and her B.S. from Iowa State University all in Chemical Engineering. Dr. Kuczenski has been teaching since 2007 and focuses on courses which are commonly found in first years of an engineering education (e.g. introduction to engineering, engineering graphics, statics, and dynamics) or are heavily based in engineering design. At Santa Clara University, she teaches ENGR 1: Introduction to Engineering and ENGR 110: Community-Based Engineering Design. ENGR 1 is a course which provides students with a hands-on introduction to the art and science of engineering. The lecture focuses on tools for student success which includes learning about engineering and its different disciplines, the societal impact of engineering, and on engineering design. The lab introduces students to activities related to each engineering discipline at SCU as well as teamwork and communication. ENGR 110 combines engineering design with service learning and gives students practical experience in applying the engineering design process to a real problem in the community. Teams of students interact directly with a community partner and work from ideation through final prototype to provide a solution to a need in their local community.
