What is SIHC?
This is an intensive one-month program for local high school students to be offered as a pilot at Santa Clara University in the summer of 2016. The program capitalizes on SCU's Frugal Innovation Hub and more than 10 years of experience in K-12 outreach to provide students with a rewarding opportunity to create mobile applications for underserved populations.
Why SIHC?
The SIHC program will provide students experience in mobile technology and its importance in empowering underserved people in local or foreign communities. The possibility of a conference publication and the donation of their code for use by humanitarian organizations will also provide participants with an opportunity to conduct research and get a paper published prior to college.
Our Dean in the School of Engineering, at Santa Clara Univeristy - Dean Godfrey Mungal - has offered that all conference fees will be paid for participants that have been accepted by SCU and plan to attend the undergraduate program in the School of Engineering.
Where is it?
The SIHC will be held in the Mobile Lab (part of the Frugal Innovation Lab) on SCU campus (Guadalupe Hall, 455 El Camino Real - 3rd floor).
The Mobile Lab (part of the Frugal Innovation Lab) collaborates with humanitarian organizations to develop mobile applications that deliver meaningful information and services to improve the lives of people in underserved communities, and to help small businesses to thrive in remote areas where Internet access is unavailable.
When is SIHC?
The SIHC will operated as a non-residential program from 9am-4pm each day, from July 11th - August 5th, 2016.
We will be unable to offer the program in the summer of 2017. Program information for 2018 is TBD.
Fees
Each participant is required to submit a $250 non-refundable registration fee.
However, students from low-income families may submit a letter from their principal stating that they are on a free or reduced price lunch program to apply for one of six $200 registration fee discounts. Failure to submit the registration fee by the deadline will disqualify the student who will be replaced by another applicant on the waitlist.
Who can apply to the Institute?
Any high school student approaching completion of their Junior or Senior years in the SF Bay Area may apply. Participants will be selected according to their academic performance and programming experience, with preference given to those from groups underrepresented in computing, such as women and minorities.
