Biography
Dr. Hamed Akbari, MD, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Bioengineering at Santa Clara University. Before joining SCU, he worked at the Artificial Intelligence in Biomedical Imaging Lab (AIBIL) and the Center for Biomedical Image Computing & Analytics (CBICA) at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Akbari holds a PhD from the Tokyo Institute of Technology, where his research focused on applying artificial intelligence to minimally invasive and robotic surgery, and an MD from Tehran University of Medical Sciences.
Dr. Akbari’s interdisciplinary research integrates AI, clinical data science, medical image processing, radiogenomics, and machine learning to advance medical diagnostics and treatment strategies. His work has contributed to automating malignancy detection, refining tumor segmentation, quantifying tissue perfusion, identifying radiogenomic biomarkers, and developing personalized treatment plans. These contributions have had a significant impact on minimally invasive surgery, image-based treatment planning, and personalized medicine.
At SCU, Dr. Akbari combines his medical and technological expertise to foster innovation and collaboration, enhancing both the academic community and the broader field of bioengineering.
