Biography

Yingqing Qiu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Sustainable Engineering at Santa Clara University (SCU). She received her Ph.D. in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering from Oregon State University in 2020, her M.S. in Geotechnical Engineering from Northwestern University in 2015, and her B.S. in Civil Engineering from China Agricultural University in 2014. Prior to her appointment at SCU, she practiced as a geotechnical engineer in the San Francisco Bay Area for five years. She is a licensed Professional Engineer in California, with expertise in site response analysis, ground improvement design, slope stability analysis, numerical modeling of dams and levees during seismic events, soil testing (in-situ and laboratory), and construction monitoring.

Her primary research focuses on understanding coastal soil and structural failure mechanisms during earthquakes and the subsequent impacts of tsunamis. She uses numerical modeling tools to simulate excess pore water pressure in both saturated and partially saturated soils. These simulations are then used to predict soil liquefaction and evaluate the strength reduction of foundation soils. Additional research interests include the uncertainty quantification of soil hydraulic conductivity, considering both temporal and spatial variability, through the application of stochastic finite element and stochastic collocation methods.
