| Abby Aguirre, Michael Hall, Tim Lim, and Jonathan Trinh, electrical and computer engineering seniors, won the 2019-2020 IEEE Circuit and Systems Society Student Design Phase I Competition with their work developing a hardware security solution known as a Physical Unclonable Function (PUF) using a technique to generate a unique "fingerprint" on silicon. | SCU Engineers Without Borders raised $5,000 in their 3rd Annual Virtual 5K for $5K run last weekend! More than 75 runners hit the pavement or the trail to raise money for life-changing projects for SCU EWB's partner community in Rwanda. More about SCU EWB here. |
| Bingxin Hou (computer science and engineering PhD student), Ying Liu, and Nam Ling (both computer science and engineering), have a paper, "A Super-Fast Deep Network for Moving Object Detection," accepted by the 2020 IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS 2020), to be held in Seville, Spain, May 17-20. ISCAS is the flagship conference of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society. |
| Ali Khoshniat, PhD candidate, and Dr. Ramesh Abhari, adviser, (electrical and computer engineering) presented a paper, "System Level Radiated Emission Mitigation at High Frequencies when Other Methods are Not Effective Enough," at DesignCon2020, Jan. 26-28, Santa Clara Convention Center. The paper is a finalist for Best Paper Award based on its quality, relevance, impact, and originality. |
| Mariah Manzano '20 (web design and engineering) received the Society of Women Engineers’ Guiding Star Award, recognizing exceptional collegiate leaders who have made outstanding contributions to SWE. Mariah created SWE Sisters, co-created and co-led SWE++, began the STEM Girls Mentorship Program, and more! |

| The SCU SWE Section (Society of Women Engineers) received the Outstanding Outreach Event Award for its execution of SWE++, a coding program to introduce underprivileged middle school students to computer science. Members received their award at WE Local San Diego, an event recognizing SWE members, women engineers, advocates and groups making a difference in their community and among peers in engineering and technology. |

| David Anastasiu (computer science and engineering) will serve on the organizing committee of The 7th IEEE International Conference on Data Science and Advanced Analytics in Sydney, Australia, in October as a Publicity/Media Chair. DSAA is a prestigious Data Science conference with an h5-index of 20, currently #19 in the Google Scholar ranking of Data Mining & Analysis conferences and journals. |
| Fatemeh Tehranipoor (electrical and computer engineering) will serve as Technical Program Committee member of the Design Automation Conference (DAC 2020) in San Francisco, CA, July 19-23; Great Lakes Symposium on VLSI (GLSVLSI 2020) in Beijing, China, May 27-29; and CODES+ISSS 2020 Conference, the International Conference on Hardware-Software Codesign and System Synthesis in Shanghai, China, Oct. 11-16. |
| Kurt Schab (electrical and computer engineering) was selected to organize his proposed session on "Design and Analysis of Time-Varying Electromagnetic Systems" at the IEEE International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation and North American Radio Science Meeting (IEEE APS/URSI 2020), one of the largest global meetings on applied electromagnetics, in Montreal, Canada, this July. |
| Navid Shaghaghi (computer science and engineering, mathematics and computer science) has been invited to present his education-related project, TailorEd, at this year's Course Hero Education Summit, in July. TailorEd is a data science project studying the effects of classroom technology, seating configuration, and pedagogical tools on student learning outcomes in order to supply educators with valuable information to set up more effective learning environments. |
| Michel Saad, Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering, passed away Jan. 16. Professor Saad joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering in 1959 and retired in 2002. During his tenure, he spent three terms as department chair and served as Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs. He will be fondly and lovingly remembered, having touched the lives of many students and colleagues during his time at SCU. More. |

| Frank Altamura '08, MBA '18 (mechanical engineering) was appointed to the California Contractors State License Board. His term runs through June 1, 2022. Since 2012, Frank has served as a Product Manager for Trane Energy Services and Controls. He previously served as a Product Manager for Serious Energy, and as a Founding Engineer with Valence Energy. |
| Mechanical engineering alumnus Frank Cepollina '59, who previously established the Frank Cepollina Family Endowed Scholarship for undergraduate engineering students has increased his commitment to the fund with a generous bequest intention from his estate. Cepi's illustrious NASA career and his role in helping to repair the Hubble Space Telescope led to his induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2003. More here. |

| Civil Engineering alums Jack Going '49 and Bill Veale ’50 recently passed away. Jack (a 1993 DEA recipient) was a founding member of the Board of Fellows and led the reroute of The Alameda in the 1980s. Bill joined SCU after serving in the US Navy during WWII. He enjoyed a successful career in general construction and in the US Naval Reserve. |

| BioInnovation and Design Lab has received a $50,000 award from Cepheid Incorporated in support of "Design of Machine Learning and Virtual Reality Tools and Platforms for Advancing Molecular Diagnostics Testing and Development." Faculty will guide student efforts to develop automation software for data gathering, consolidation, and management and virtual reality immersive environments for user training in diagnostic platforms such as PCR. |
