Lawrence P. Burke
For 2024, a special award was given out. The Distinguished Service Award recognizes an individual who has attained distinction through many years of service and generosity to the School of Engineering and to the engineering profession.
The 2024 Distinguished Service Award is awarded to Lawrence P. Burke for his significant career achievements and for his generosity and commitment to the School of Engineering. Larry is a pioneer and leader in the field of light sport aircraft. After completing his education with Santa Clara University, Larry founded and chaired the Light Aircraft Manufacturers Association–LAMA. Today, he serves as chairman emeritus.
Larry’s work with LAMA, along with his expertise in engineering, business management, and concern for quality, were critical to the Federal Aviation Administration’s acceptance of a consensus standard for ultralight aircraft. He served on the FAA’s Aviation Rulemaking Advisory Committee, helped create the rules that defined ultralight aircraft, and was directly involved in developing ASTM standards for these aircraft.
Beyond his career accomplishments, Larry’s extraordinary and transformative generosity to Santa Clara University and the School of Engineering supports women and first-generation students, making a Santa Clara education possible for students for whom a Santa Clara education would be financially out of reach. In particular, his remarkable generosity to women pursuing an engineering education will allow Santa Clara to attract and educate talented young women who will help develop solutions to some of society’s most intractable concerns.
For all you have done, thank you and congratulations, Larry! Please come forward.
