On Oct. 24, Assistant Director of Journalism & Media Ethics Anita Varma delivered three guest lectures at Penn State’s Bellisario College of Communications. Her presentations included “Framing, Sourcing, and News Values” presented to an undergraduate Reporting Methods class, “Newsworthy or Not? Implications of News Values for Marginalized Communities” for an undergraduate News Media Ethics class, and a talk with PhD students and faculty entitled “Solidarity in Action: A Case Study of Journalistic Humanizing Techniques in the San Francisco Homeless Project.”
Varma’s trip and presentations were part of the Davis Ethics Award which she received at the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) annual conference in August. Don W. Davis Professor of Ethics at Penn State Patrick Plaisance, (shown in photo), author of Media Ethics: Key Principles for Responsible Practice and editor of Journal of Media Ethics, invited and hosted Varma during her campus visit.
