The Markkula Prize
Ethics Center fellows and interns from the Class of 2023 gathered at Vari Hall with Ethics Center Staff for a senior send-off as they completed the final week of their undergraduate journey at Santa Clara University. Executive Director, Don Heider, and Ethics Center Advisory Board Member, Kristi Markkula Bowers addressed the group and announced the winner of the 2023 Markkula Prize.
Named in honor of Center benefactor A.C. "Mike" Markkula Jr., the Markkula Prize goes to a graduating senior from an Ethics Center fellowship who has shown outstanding commitment to ethics, either through creating programs for fellow students or completing significant research in the field.
This year's recipient is 2022-23 Hackworth Fellow Vicky Pham. Pham's contributions and involvement with Journalism and Media Ethics demonstrated outstanding achievement in the area of ethics. Pham is a playwright and was interested in Hollywood casting and authentic portrayals of people who are historically marginalized, and she worked with Director of Journalism and Media Ethics, Subbu Vincent to research and develop a framework for ethical casting. Her framework entitled Ethical Casting in an Ethically Realized Hollywood is published as part of the Journalism and Media Ethics Focus Area on the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics website.
