Many of the programs developed by the Ethics Center this past year were designed to help society address the ethical dilemmas of the day as well as those not yet in sight. Like other technological milestones of our past -- the personal computer, the internet, and the mobile phone -- artificial intelligence-powered tools have burst on the scene with great promise, but also with great potential to harm society, much of which is still unknown.
Throughout the past year, analysis of those technological game changers as well as the ethical practices of the venture capital and equity firms who fund these advancements, along with addressing misinformation while both improving the qualification of media sources and giving attention to diverse representation within the media narrative, are all concepts that have driven programs and projects throughout the Center.
The report highlights programs such as the Institute for Technology, Ethics, and Culture (ITEC); the Lucas Institute for Venture and Ethics; Source Diversity; Government Ethics Fellowships, Wild Beasts: A Podcast About Ethics; and our many student internships, fellowships and programs.
Interest in this work, particularly around ITEC, was confirmed by the more than 400% increase in the Ethics Center's media presence over the previous year, driven notably by the release of ITEC and the ITEC Handbook in June, 2023.
