Seniors show outstanding commitment to ethics

A Center Environmental Ethics Fellow and Honzel Fellow won this year's Markkula Prize, awarded to students who either create outstanding programs for their peers or engage in significant research.
Lucas Hill was both a health care ethics intern and held the Honzel Fellowship, a position as peer educator to others in the Health Care Ethics Internship program. Hill piloted several new rotations for the interns at Kaiser Santa Clara, enabling students to shadow health care professionals in Pharmacy, Internal Medicine, and Senior Health, in addition to already existing rotations at O'Connor Hospital and other settings. In addition, Hill undertook a research project for which he developed a paper on health care access for undocumented immigrants.
Environmental Ethics Fellow Blair Libby's work was central in the creation of a new course, "Perspectives on Laudato Si'" which explored Pope Francis' encyclical on the environment. The class involved organizing 17 guest lecturers and panelists in a class for 21 students. Libby provided consistent leadership in every aspect of the project, from speaking with funder John Casey to organization, communication, advertising, and class participation.
The Markkula Prize was created by the Center's Advisory Board to honor its first chair and seed funder A.C. "Mike" Markkula Jr.
