Patrick Lin speaks at Tech Museum on May 13
With self-driving cars, replacing the human with an AI driver also means shifting the burden of responsibilities and liabilities to technology developers. Because AI decisions are either scripted or determined by learning algorithms, they seem premeditated in an important sense, unlike a bad human reflex; and the ethical and legal implications are unclear. This talk introduces the radical challenge that autonomous vehicles pose to responsibility and decision-making, not just for crash scenarios but also everyday decisions that create or transfer risk, including in self-navigation decisions. Speaker Patrick Lin is an associate professor of Philosophy at Cal Poly, and author of Why Ethics Matters for Autonomous Cars, Autonomous Driving (Springer, 2015) and “The Ethical Dilemma of Self-Driving Cars”, TED-ED (animated shorts), December 8, 2015. This event is the second in a series of collaborative projects from the Center’s partnership with the Tech Museum of Innovation.
Lunch provided.
