At the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics, business ethics is not an abstract notion.
Our programs meet the needs of companies in the Silicon Valley and beyond for practical tools to address corporate governance, doing business internationally, and setting the ethical tone at the top.
Partners in Business Ethics
Through the Partnership, companies in sectors from information technology to finance join together with distinguished academics and subject matter experts to explore questions, challenges, and opportunities faced by organizations in managing their ethics and compliance programs.
Ethical Culture Assessment
Although they share responsibility for the ethical culture of the organization, boards of directors don't always have a clear window on the attitudes and behaviors of employees. The Ethical Culture Assessment offers boards of directors actionable information about the state of ethics and compliance in their organization.
Corporate Governance
In collaboration with the Rock Center for Corporate Governance and the Silicon Valley Directors' Exchange, the Center offers regular programs of special interest to general counsels, corporate board members, and others responsible for corporate governance. We also sponsor annual visits from justices of the Delaware Court, the primary source for corporate law in the United States. Out of these programs, we have developed an extensive library of material on corporate governance.
Business Ethics Internships
Our internships place Santa Clara University undergraduate students in ethics and compliance positions at local corporations. Silicon Valley companies such as Cisco offer students a chance to see firsthand how ethics is handled in day to day operations.
