What does a sense of belonging mean to you? Does it come from within? Are there certain things that you can do in your life to make you feel like you belong? What are the factors that impact one’s sense of belonging? These are the questions that Kendall Schrohe and Hydeia Wysinger’s podcast “A Sense of Belonging” aim to answer.

Hydeia Wysinger is a psychology and public health major and religious studies and political science minor and was a 2023-24 Hackworth Fellow with the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University. Views are her own.

Kendall Schrohe ’24 graduated with a philosophy major and entrepreneurship minor and was a 2023-2034 Hackworth Fellow with the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University. Views are her own.

Episode 1: What is a Sense of Belonging on a University Landscape

What does a sense of belonging mean to you? Does it come from within? Are there certain things that you can do in your life to make you feel like you belong? What are the factors that impact one’s sense of belonging? These are the questions that Kendall Schrohe and Hydeia Wysinger’s podcast “A Sense of Belonging” aim to answer.

Episode 2: Elena Carter’s Perspective on a Sense of Belonging at Santa Clara University as a Transfer and Commuter Student

Hydeia Wysinger and Kendall Schrohe talk to Elena Carter, a senior transfer and commuter student at SCU about her college experience and the different factors that impacted her sense of belonging.

Episode 3: A Sociologist's Perspective on Sense of Belonging 

For this episode, Hydeia Wysinger and Kendall Schrohe talk to Kim Lear, a sociologist who is currently conducting research on college students and how COVID-19 has impacted them. The three discuss the various impacts college students face with a sense of belonging and how the pandemic had an impact on this notion.

Episode 4: Facilitating Community throughout Residence Halls

In this episode, Hydeia Wysinger and Kendall Schrohe talk with Jack Hartline '24 about his role in facilitating a sense of belonging in the residence halls. They discuss various ways in which they found community with a particular highlight in clubs. 

Episode 5: Creating the Community You Hope To Find

In this final podcast episode, Hydeia Wysinger and Kendall Schrohe talk with Keanu Spindola '24 about his journey to SCU. The trio discusses untraditional paths in which one receives a college education and how life experiences impact one's sense of belonging journey.
