In 2018-2019, as part of a project that he produced as a Hackworth Fellow at the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics, Santa Clara University senior Jeff Kampfe interviewed six experts who offered a variety of perspectives on the subject of data ethics. The following are edited transcripts of those interviews, which address issues such as the relationship between data and truth, the trade-offs to be made in the ethical use of data, the question of data ownership, and the virtues of a good data scientist.
