A Recent Conversation with Three Experts
Irina Raicu is the director of the Internet Ethics program (@IEthics) at the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics. Views are her own.
On May 16, 2023, as part of the “IT, Ethics, and Law” lecture series, the Center co-sponsored (with the High Tech Law Institute) a panel discussion on some of the technical, legal, and ethical issues related to generative AI. The panel featured a copyright law expert, an AI researcher who is also a composer and music performer, and a multi-disciplinary visual artist—all of whom teach at Santa Clara University.
The topic, of course, is extremely broad, and we could easily have had (and still might!) multiple events to delve more deeply into key issues; still, the conversation addressed the fairness of training data collection and usage as well as the application of the fair use doctrine; the impact of generative AI tools on creativity and creative labor; the balancing of various rights; the need to identify the right use cases for generative AI; questions about liability and responsibility; and other challenges and promises that arise from our attempts to adjust to—and best use—this fast-moving technology.
The video of the event is now available. We keep learning new things about generative AI, but some of the issues highlighted in this conversation are likely to be part of the conversation about “the good life” for a long time to come.
