Leveling the Playing Field
Growing up a very active child, my parents thought that getting me involved in sports might burn off some of my energy. That’s all it took—as soon as I started playing organized sports, I just totally fell in love and became a very competitive kid. I always wanted to see how far I could push myself. As soon as I hit one goal I wanted to reach the next.
That drive is how I made it to Santa Clara, and I was fortunate to receive a scholarship that enabled me to attend. I was so excited because I knew that if I applied myself, the sky was the limit because of the opportunities this school provides.
Coming to Santa Clara was really intimidating at first. I attended a low-income high school in Houston, Texas, so I felt a little insecure. But when you’re playing sports—whether intramural, club, or team—it doesn’t matter if you’re rich or poor. Our sports leagues and teams encourage sportsmanship, teamwork, cooperation and physical fitness. All team members have outrageous work ethics, emphasizing hard work both on and off the field.
In addition, playing sports here has reinforced my time management skills and helped me build my friend group. And as I got to know people, I loved being a Bronco even more. I have found that everyone here is really easygoing and has very strong principles.
Santa Clara is giving me such a shot at becoming who I want to be—it inspires me to be my best so that one day I can also give back. You would be surprised how much of a difference your generosity makes. There are so many people who need help, who wouldn’t have that big shot at success if it weren’t for your generosity. So, thank you for leveling the playing field with your gift through the Santa Clara Fund!
