Assistant Professor of New Testament
Originally from Mexico, Alberto Solano is delighted to join the JST community in Fall 2025. He previously served as Assistant Tutor at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford, and earned both his M.Phil. and D.Phil. in New Testament from the University of Oxford.
Alberto’s research centers on the development and reception of the New Testament, with particular focus on early Christian exegesis. He is especially interested in how early Christian communities understood their relationship to Jewish traditions and practices, as well as the questions surrounding when, and to what extent, a parting of ways began to emerge. His aim is to contribute to ongoing scholarly discussions that illuminate the diverse religious practices of the first two centuries CE and the ways they shaped both Christian and Jewish identities.
His most recent work explores the use of the Sinai narrative in the Epistle to the Hebrews, employing it as a lens to study how early Christian writers reinterpreted the giving of the law in order to shape their communities’ identity.
Alberto’s teaching is deeply informed by years of ministry experience, particularly among Latino communities. Before his studies at Oxford, he taught biblical studies and pastoral ministry at a seminary in Mexico, where he combined academic rigor with pastoral sensitivity in the classroom. He and his family look forward to becoming part of the Bay Area community.
