JST offers generous institutional scholarship packages to all applicants. Every student that applies for a JST scholarship is guaranteed a partial-tuition scholarship. Additionally, JST awards on average 9 full-tuition scholarships each year. To learn more about the JST’s scholarships and the application process visit our scholarships page.
New for Fall 2024: Cost of Living Stipends
Beginning in Fall 2024, JST will launch a pilot program through which applicants who are awarded a full-tuition scholarship are also eligible to receive a $12,000 annual stipend for living expenses. Preference will be given to applicants who intend to live on campus as full-time residential students.
Because funds are limited, not all full-tuition scholarship recipients are guaranteed to receive a stipend. In the event that demand exceeds the funding available, the following criteria will be used to evaluate stipend candidates:
- Whether your application was completed by the February 1 priority deadline for financial aid
- Your academic record
- Your record of service in ministry, social justice organizations, or denominational service programs (such as the Jesuit Volunteer Corps)
- Your documented financial need
JST offers many employment opportunities on our campus in Berkeley. All JST students are eligible to apply for these positions, which are a great source of funding and also provide professional training and hands-on experience that contributes to their overall formation. Students have the opportunity to work up to 19 hours a week and are paid at least $16.00 per hour. Students that work 19 hours per week throughout the academic year would earn approximately $11,000.
Haciendo Caminos Fellowships
JST is one of the eighteen Catholic institutions of higher education participating in the Haciendo Caminos initiative, funded and administered by the Lilly Foundation. Haciendo Caminos supports Hispanic and Latino/a young adults who choose to pursue graduate education in theology and pastoral studies, to serve in leadership roles in parishes and communities throughout the United States.
If you accept an offer of admission to JST, Haciendo Caminos may be able to help you meet the costs of graduate education. Applicants who choose to attend JST can be nominated for a Haciendo Caminos grant if they meet the following criteria:
- Young adult between the ages of 18 and 39
- Grounded in the cultural and religious experience of the emerging generations of Hispanic Catholics in the United States
- Admitted to a JST degree program
- Demonstrated capacity to engage in theological education and to employ that education in pastoral leadership roles, particularly within the Hispanic or Latina/o communities
- Demonstrated financial need
Funds awarded to students through the Hacienda Caminos initiative are provided by the Lilly Foundation. These funds will be offered separately from, and in addition to, any scholarships awarded by JST.
Federal Loans
Eligible graduate students can also apply for federal loans to offset the cost of tuition and living expenses during their studies. Federal loan awards and disbursements are managed by Santa Clara University's Financial Aid Office.
Interested students should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and provide SCU's institutional code 001326. You can find additional details on completing the FAFSA on the Santa Clara University Financial Aid website.
