Dear Members of the Santa Clara University Community,
We write this on the day of the jury verdict in the trial of Officer Derek Chauvin. No single death, trial, or verdict can capture what our country has experienced in the year since the killing of George Floyd. Justice and a righteous peace will be achieved only when we confront the ugliness of structural racism and how it suffocates and destroys.
As university leaders who have taught and researched U.S. law for decades, we realize that this nation’s history of racial oppression and unjust systems must be acknowledged explicitly alongside its constitutional origins. This reality weighs solemnly on us for a number of reasons. We are mothers, daughters, women of faith and spirit who are committed to social justice and to continuing on the path to becoming an antiracist university. Like so many of you in the SCU community and beyond -- administration, students, staff, faculty, graduates -- we share the desire and intention to provide spaces for support, kinship, and learning particularly in these difficult times. We recall with gratitude that over eight hundred of you attended the SCU vigil for racial justice last June 2 after the killing of George Floyd. Now, post-verdict, as we move through the rest of this month and toward the one-year-observance of Mr. Floyd's death, we are here to listen, support, respond, and uplift. As hard as it is through email and Zoom, let us look out for one another and ask for help when we need it. In the coming hours and days, we will provide information about virtual gatherings and resources to bring our community together.
Our first invitation is to join us tomorrow at noon on Zoom at the previously announced Community Conversations discussion of the legacy of George Floyd and the trial of Derek Chauvin. Professors David Ball, Ellen Kreitzberg, Margaret M. Russell and others will be present to listen and answer questions. The login information is at the bottom of this message.
May we grow stronger together as we share and support one another.
With gratitude and peace,
Lisa A. Kloppenberg
