Permission is required to copy or publish portions of materials from the collections. To use any image from the collections in publications, displays, exhibitions, or other non-personal use, we require patrons to complete an Image Use Request form.
Once we receive your form, we will attempt to ascertain the owner of copyright for the image. For items that Archives & Special Collections owns copyright for, or are in the public domain, we will proceed to draft an Image Use Agreement for you, and the main point of this agreement is for Archives & Special Collections to receive credit for providing the reproduction of the image or document. For items whose copyright Archives & Special Collections does not own, we will attempt to assist you in identifying the copyright holder.
When you enter into an Image Use Agreement with Archives & Special Collections, we are not licensing the reproduction to you; we are giving you permission based on the copyright status of the work to use the reproduction we create in your publication, exhibitition, etc. Credit must be given with the phrase Image courtesy of Archives & Special Collections, Santa Clara University. One copy of the publication, exhibition catalog, etc. in which a reproduction of an image or document from our collections is utilized must be submitted to Archives & Special Collections as soon as it is available.
