Scribes, Saints & Scholars is a celebration of the presence of the Saint John's Bible at Santa Clara University. It is also an appreciation of a thousand years of the Bible, in manuscript and print, which precedes it.
The exhibition features medieval manuscripts and printed books, including many of the most important Bibles in the history of printing: a 1611 King James Bible, a Luther Bible, and Brian Walton's great London Polyglot.
The centerpiece of the exhibit is the University's copy of Prophets, the fourth volume of the Saint John's Bible, Heritage Edition. Also on display are several framed illuminations for the Book of Genesis, on special loan from St. John's University.
The exhibit pays tribute to the many "scribes, saints and scholars," from the 12th century to the present, who have written, translated and illuminated masterpieces of sacred text.
The exhibit is a collaborative effort involving the Library's Archives & Special Collections and several sister institutions. We would like to acknowledge the generous loan of rare books and manuscripts by the California Province of the Society of Jesus Archives (Santa Clara), the Graduate Theological Union Library (Berkeley), and Mount St. Mary's College Library (Los Angeles).
